It’s been maybe 8 hours so far. We can’t give Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew a full review. With everything else we’re trying to review at the minute, it doesn’t feel like we’ll be able to give it the time it deserves this side of Christmas.
It absolutely deserves some love, and whilst we’re not big enough to move the needle in any way. It would be a travesty to talk about it a little.
So, here’s our “Quick Look” review of the stealth/strategy/pirate gem that seems to have been overlooked. A blend of Hitman and Dishonored combined with a top-down strategic view, it’s pretty special.

The Gist
Imagine a crew of undead, magical pirates pulling off intricate heists against an army of fanatics in a fantastical Caribbean setting.
That’s Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, a real-time stealth tactics game from Mimimi Games. The undisputed masters of the genre responsible for Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and Desperados III.
You play as Afia Manicato. She’s cursed pirate with a mean cutlass and the ability to teleport-stab her way through enemies.
Your home base is The Red Marley, a sentient ghost ship with a bone to pick with the tyrannical Inquisition of the Burning Maiden. So you set sail in the Lost Caribbean. Seeking-out legendary Black Pearls to resurrect a crew of eight legendary cursed pirates.
Then, use their unique supernatural abilities to unravel a grand mystery and find Captain Mordechai’s treasure.

The gameplay
Each mission drops you and a small team of your choosing onto a beautifully crafted island. These are essentially a complex, clockwork puzzle box patrolled by guards.
Your job isn’t to fight your way through (although we generallly do..), but to ghost your way past. Using a combination of stealth, distractions, and perfectly synchronized takedowns to achieve your objective without raising an alarm.
The loop:
This is a game of observation, planning, and execution. You’ll spend most of your time hiding in bushes, studying guard patrol patterns, and identifying opportunities.
The core loop is exhilarating:
- Survey: Watch the guards. See their lines of sight (represented by view cones). Learn their routes.
- Plan: Select your crew members. Maybe use the sharpshooter Teresa to snipe a pesky lookout from afar, while the plant-mage Suleidy grows a bush to hide in.
- Execute: The magic happens with “Shadow Mode,” a feature that lets you pause the game and queue up actions for each of your crew members.
- You can tell one character to throw a distraction, another to assassinate a guard, and a third to hide the body—all with the press of a single button.
When it works, you feel like a tactical genius. When it fails, you hit the quick-load key (and you will, a lot).

What Makes It Shine:
- The Cursed Crew: The characters are the heart and soul.
This isn’t just “the guy with the gun” or “the one with the trap”. Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew gives you a ship’s cook who uses a magical anchor to lure enemies. A shipwright who can fire his cannon-wielding friend across the map. Even a navigator who can open underwater portals.
The creativity is off the charts. - Player Freedom: Unlike Mimimi’s previous games, Shadow Gambit is non-linear.
You choose which islands to tackle and, most importantly, which crew members to take with you.
This adds immense replayability. Solving a mission with one team composition is a completely different challenge than with another. - A Forgiving Loop: Death is not the end. Your crew is already dead! If a character falls, you can retrieve their “soul” and revive them back on the ship after a cooldown.
This, combined with the incredibly generous quick-save feature, encourages experimentation. The game actively encourages it. So you can try out daring plays without severe punishment. - Vibrant World: The “Lost Caribbean” is a stunning, colourful, and imaginative setting. It genuinely feels like a magical blend of Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island.

Things to consider:
- Analysis Paralysis: The sheer number of character abilities and enemy patrols can sometimes be overwhelming. Especially for newcomers to the genre.
- Patience Required: This is not an action game. It is a slow, methodical, and cerebral experience. If you’re not a fan of trial-and-error gameplay, this might not be for you.
The Verdict:
Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew is not just another great game from Mimimi; it’s the triumphant culmination of everything they learned from their previous masterpieces.
The supernatural pirate setting allows for more creative freedom and fun than ever before. Whilst the non-linear structure gives players unprecedented control over their tactical experience.
Sadly, this is the final game from Mimimi Games, as the studio closed its doors after its release.
They have left the industry with their magnum opus—a polished, ingenious, and ridiculously fun stealth-tactics adventure.
It is a masterful and magical swan song, and an absolute must-play for fans of puzzle, stealth, and strategy games.
Truly exceptional.
