The Future of Assassin’s Creed

Ubisoft has just dropped a massive State of the Union for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and there is a lot for fans to dig into.

From long-awaited technical patches to updates on the mysterious Codename Hexe, the roadmap for the Brotherhood is looking packed as we head into 2026.

We love the Assassin’s Creed Franchise. With Shadows to take on next, already installed and ready to go once we complete Death Stranding 2. The series has had wobbles, for sure, but it has such a strong legacy. It’s great to see some future details.

Here are the biggest takeaways from the latest update.

Assassin’s Creed Unity Gets the 60FPS Treatment

The headline news for many will be the surprise technical update for a cult favourite. Tomorrow, Assassin’s Creed Unity will receive a free 60 FPS patch for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

Despite its rocky launch years ago, Unity is often cited by fans as having the best parkour and city density in the series. Seeing Arno’s journey through the French Revolution with modern smoothness is a huge win for preservation and player experience. If you’re on Xbox and haven’t played it, the game will also be part of the Xbox Free Play Days from April 2nd to 6th.

Unity is actually one of our favourites here at ninjarefinery.com. Of the classic-style Assassin’s Creed Games, it felt very much a pinnacle of the series (after initial launch issues).

Codename Hexe

Ubisoft confirmed that Jean Guesdon has returned to the franchise as Head of Content and is also taking the reins as Creative Director for Codename Hexe.

While they are keeping the gameplay under wraps for now, they described Hexe as a “unique, darker, narrative-driven” experience. The team at Ubisoft Montreal is currently focused on delivering a “pivotal moment in history,” and while they admitted they will be “quiet for a little longer,” the hype for this supernatural-leaning entry is officially building.

Multiplayer and Co-Op: What’s Next?

For those missing the social aspect of the Creed, there were two major reveals:

Codename Invictus: This dedicated PvP multiplayer project is being built by veterans of the For Honor team. Ubisoft clarified that while it’s a new approach for the franchise, it might not be exactly what the current rumors suggest. They are looking to bring players in for “test and learn” phases early in development.

The Return of Co-Op: Tucked away in the update was the confirmation that Ubisoft is actively looking into bringing co-op back to Assassin’s Creed. Whether this is part of a future mainline title or a standalone project remains to be seen, but the feedback has clearly been heard.

Multiplayer has always been a weird one in Assassin’s Creed. But seeing a fresh take, and a focus on it could be really interesting. We want the best out of the series, so hopefully the potential for multiplayer can be squeezed-out in the future.

Shadows Winds Down as the Netflix Series Heats Up

As Assassin’s Creed Shadows approaches its first anniversary on March 20, Ubisoft announced the game is entering its final phase of support. There will be a celebratory livestream on Twitch (10AM PT / 6PM CET) featuring giveaways and a look at the latest updates.

It’ll be basically on that 1 year anniversary that we’ll start playing the game. So hopefully we’ll be getting it at it’s very best!

On the multimedia front, Ubisoft teased that the Netflix live-action series is making significant progress. With the cast recently finalized, they promised we “won’t have to wait very long” for a first look.

Assassin’s Creed

It’s a transitional time for Assassin’s Creed. While Shadows is moving into the sunset, the pivot back to technical updates for older titles like Unity shows Ubisoft understands the value of their legacy.

The mention of co-op returning is the real dark horse here—if they can capture the magic of Unity’s co-op missions with modern stability, they could have a massive hit on their hands.

We’re always interested in what comes next, and with all the chaos that is Ubisoft, there’s always a fear that some of these things might just collapse and fade away. Sure, the series is a banner series for the studio, but with all the internal strife, you just never know.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that it carries on for a long time and goes from strength to strength. But only time will tell.
