The Light Returns: Everything You Need to Know About the Paladin in Diablo IV

After much anticipation, the Paladin has officially returned to the world of Diablo. Released as part of the lead-up to the Lord of Hatred expansion, this holy warrior is available to play right now for those who pre-purchase the expansion.

It’s crazy to think that the Paladin class, one of the most anticipated by Diablo fans is here, and it’s not even neccesarily the main class of the new expansion. There’s another class set to release when the expansion comes out next year, too!

Whether you’re a veteran of the Zakarum faith or a new recruit to the Light, here is the breakdown of what to expect from Sanctuary’s newest class.

The Wardens of Light: Lore and Origins

Unlike the Paladins of old who fell to corruption, this new generation hails from the Wardens of Light.

Founded by an ex-Zakarum Paladin, this order is built on the belief that the Light is not owned by a deity, but is a force that resides within the self – fueled by sheer will and the desire to protect the downtrodden.

They live by five virtues: Valor, Justice, Hope, Fate, and Wisdom. In game, this translates to a stoic, heavily armored tank that excels at commanding the battlefield with a sword, shield, and the all-new Flail weapon type.

Gameplay: Hammers, Auras, and Oaths

The Paladin brings a “tank-support” hybrid playstyle that can pivot into a devastating holy avenger. Here are the core pillars of their kit:

1. Auras

A staple of the class returns. Auras provide passive benefits to you and your party, but can now be activated for a short-term, high-impact burst.

  • Fanaticism: Passively boosts Attack Speed and Crit Chance. Active casts weaken all nearby enemies.
  • Defiance: Passively boosts Armor and Resistances. Active makes you Unstoppable.
  • Holy Light: Passively pulses holy damage to enemies. Active unleashes bolts of light that damage foes and heal you on return.

2. The Oath System (Class Mechanic)

Paladins can swear an Oath, a specialization that changes how their skills function:

  • Zealot: Focuses on attack speed and critical strikes (Fervor).
  • Juggernaut: Consumes Resolve to increase size and damage.
  • Judicator: Applies “Judgement” to enemies, ramping up damage taken until they die.
  • Disciple: Reduces cooldowns and buffs the “Arbiter” form (more on that below).

3. Ultimate Power: Arbiter of Justice

One of the flashiest new skills is Arbiter of Justice. This Ultimate allows you to ascend to the Heavens and crash back down, granting you wings, replacing your evade with an Angelic Leap, and dealing massive AoE damage with wing strikes.

Classic Skills Reimagined

Long-time fans will be happy to see the return of iconic skills:

  • Blessed Hammer: Yes, the spinning hammers are back.
  • Shield Bash: A high-impact charge attack.
  • Fist of the Heavens (Reimagined as Spear of the Heavens): Rains down heavenly spears that burst after a delay.
  • Zeal: A rapid-strike core skill.

New Unique Items

Blizzard has also dropped a trove of new Uniques to support the class. Highlights include:

  • Herald’s Morningstar (Mace): Gives a chance to spawn free Blessed Hammers on hit.
  • Griswold’s Opus (Sword): A callback to the Tristram blacksmith, focusing on Critical Strike damage and Lucky Hits.
  • Bastion of Sir Matthias (Shield): Allows blocking to trigger a free Shield Bash retaliation.

How to Play the Paladin

The Paladin is live now for players who pre-purchase the Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred expansion (set for full release on April 28, 2026).

Even if you don’t buy the expansion yet, all players can access the “Path of the Paladin” class quest in-game, which tasks you with helping a Paladin prevent a demonic ritual involving Andariel.
