007 First Light has been delayed

It looks like IO Interactive is taking a little extra time in the training facility before sending 007 out to see First Light…..

The highly anticipated James Bond origin story, 007 First Light, has been officially pushed back from its original March release date.

We’ll now have to wait until May 27, 2026, to step into the tuxedo of a young, “wet behind the ears” James Bond.

In a statement shared shortly before Christmas, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak explained that while the game is already “fully playable from beginning to end,” the team needs an additional two months for polish and refinement.

As an independent developer and publisher, IOI is clearly keen to ensure their most ambitious project to date hits the mark on day one. Particularly after publishing Minds Eye this year, to what can only be described as a mess. Not their fault from a development perspective. But publishing comes with reputational risk, and I’d wager IOI isn’t keen on any more bad press.

What we know so far

The Story: We’re getting a fresh take on Bond’s beginnings. Featuring Patrick Gibson as a rebellious Royal Navy air crewman recruited into MI6.

The Cast: It’s a star-studded affair, with Lenny Kravitz confirmed as the villain, Bawma, alongside Gemma Chan and Lennie James.

The Gameplay: Expect a blend of the “World of Assassination” stealth IOI is famous for. Combined with high-octane car chases and gadget-heavy spycraft.

The Platforms: The game is slated for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and—notably—the Nintendo Switch 2.

A tactical move?

Interestingly, the delay moves 007 First Light into the May window. This was recently vacated by Grand Theft Auto VI (which was bumped to late 2026).

Whether it’s a strategic play for a clearer release window or a genuine need for more Hitman-level polish. We’re happy to wait a few more weeks if it means a smoother experience at launch.

IO Interactive has promised more updates in early 2026. Until then, we’ll just have to keep our Walther PPKs holstered a little longer.

It’s one of only a few big AAA games we’re excited for in 2026, and IOI know how to polish a game. So waiting for First Light will absolutely be worth it. Let’s hope it comes out to great acclaim, so they can continue their string of successes!
