There was a huge Witcher IV trailer from the game awards last week, and since then, all I can think about is The Witcher. I’ve picked-up where I left off on my second play-through of the Witcher 3 and finally going to do the 2 story DLC’s.
Whilst playing through again, I want to do some things differently and experience some things for the first time. But…..I want that “best ending” again. I fluffed my way through it last time, so I wanted to make sure I hit the points that are “musts” and then I can deviate from my previous run in other areas.
Achieving the best ending, where Ciri becomes a Witcher and Geralt finds love and peace, requires careful decision-making throughout the game, particularly during key moments in the main storyline and side quests. So, to help me, and to help anyone else trying to get there. Here’s your comprehensive guide to ensure you get the ending you desire.
Romance: The Path to a Happy Heart
Most important part of it all, if you ask me! I was team Yen last time, but I can’t deviate here this time.
Geralt’s romantic life plays a significant role in his ultimate happiness. While both Triss Merigold and Yennefer of Vengerberg offer compelling companionship, choosing Yennefer is crucial for the best ending.
This means completing the quests “The Last Wish” and “No Place Like Home” in a way that favours Yennefer, expressing your love for her and committing to your relationship. Avoid pursuing Triss’s romance in the “Now or Never” quest, as this will lock you out of a future with Yennefer.
Ciri’s Destiny: Guiding the Swallow
Ciri’s journey is intertwined with Geralt’s, and your choices will heavily influence her path. To ensure she survives and thrives as a witcher, you must nurture her independence and support her agency throughout the game.
During the “Blood on the Battlefield” quest, it’s vital to allow Ciri to vent her frustration by destroying Avallac’h’s laboratory. Later, in “Final Preparations,” refuse to take Ciri to see Emperor Emhyr, even when he insists. These actions demonstrate your trust in Ciri’s abilities and foster her self-confidence, ultimately leading her to embrace her destiny as a witcher.
Additionally, taking Ciri to visit Skjall’s grave in “The Child of the Elder Blood” questline will further strengthen her emotional resilience and prepare her for the challenges ahead.
Key Choices: Shaping the Continent’s Future
Beyond romance and Ciri’s personal journey, several seemingly minor choices can influence the game’s ending. In the “Blindingly Obvious” quest, ensure you side with Dijkstra over Roche and Thaler, as this decision has far-reaching consequences for the political landscape of the Northern Kingdoms.
The Importance of Preparation
Before embarking on the final battle in “On Thin Ice,” ensure Ciri is well-prepared. This involves completing all witcher contracts with her, allowing her to train with the Lodge of Sorceresses in “Final Preparations,” and, crucially, having a snowball fight with her in Kaer Morhen. These seemingly lighthearted moments contribute significantly to Ciri’s emotional well-being and her readiness to face the White Frost.
Embracing the Journey
While this guide outlines the essential steps to achieving the best ending, remember that The Witcher 3 is about more than just reaching a specific outcome. Explore the rich world, engage with its diverse characters, and make choices that resonate with your own interpretation of Geralt of Rivia. Every decision, big or small, contributes to your unique experience in this unforgettable adventure.
What an absolute pleasure it is to be playing it again, particularly with some time since I last played. I’m remembering bits, but re-experiencing a lot, for the first time. It’s amazing how well The Witcher 3 stands up to the test of time, too. Released in 2015, it’s ten years old soon, and it’s as good, if not better than a lot of modern games being released even now.
