Review: Fifine Tank 3 Microphone

Over the past few years, I’ve really grown to love a good microphone. Whether just for voice chat, or for recording, or perhaps streaming. Finding something robust, beautiful and capable is not mean feat. Particularly at a comfortable price point for the home studio. Fifine, have once again somehow managed to tick all the boxes with the Tank 3.

If you’re in the market for a USB and XLR mic for your streaming setup, or to help get that dynamic mic range for your vocal recordings. You might want to pay attention here. Here’s a breakdown of the Fifine Tank 3.

Once again, Fifine are proving that quality doesn’t have to go hand-in-hand with high cost.

Design and Build Quality:

The first thing you’ll notice about the Tank 3 is its distinctive tank-like design. This isn’t just for show; the all-metal construction feels incredibly solid and durable. It’s clear that Fifine prioritized build quality, which is reassuring for both home and mobile recording setups. The microphone comes with a sturdy yoke mount and a detachable base, offering flexibility in positioning.

Sleek, black and slim but solid. The Tank 3 is impressive from a quality and design perspective, for sure.

Sound Quality:

The Tank 3 is a dynamic microphone with a cardioid polar pattern, making it ideal for capturing vocals and minimizing background noise. The sound profile is s warm and clear, with a good emphasis on the lower frequencies.

This makes it well-suited for podcasting, streaming, and voiceovers. However, it may require some EQ adjustments for recording singing or instruments with higher frequency ranges.

Features:

  • Dual Connectivity: The Tank 3 offers both USB and XLR connectivity, making it compatible with a wide range of devices and setups. You can plug it directly into your computer via USB for a plug-and-play experience, or use the XLR output for more professional setups with audio interfaces.
  • Onboard Controls: The microphone features a gain knob, a headphone volume control, and a mute button, allowing for quick adjustments during recording sessions.
  • Headphone Monitoring: The built-in headphone jack enables zero-latency monitoring, which is crucial for ensuring your audio is clean and free of any distracting delays.

Pros:

  • Excellent Build Quality: The Tank 3’s robust construction ensures it can withstand the rigors of regular use.
  • Versatile Connectivity: The USB/XLR options cater to both casual and professional users.

Cons:

  • Limited Frequency Response: The microphone’s emphasis on lower frequencies may not be ideal for all recording scenarios.
  • Sensitivity to Plosives: While the built-in pop filter helps, the Tank 3 can still be sensitive to plosive sounds like “p” and “b.” An external pop filter is recommended for optimal results.
  • Background Noise: Some users have reported that the microphone can pick up more background noise than other dynamic microphones in its class.

Overall:

The Fifine Tank 3 is a sweet option for those seeking a versatile and affordable microphone. Its robust build, dual connectivity, and warm sound make it a great choice for podcasters, streamers, and voiceover artists.

While it may not be the perfect solution for recording music at a professional level, or situations requiring high sensitivity, its overall performance and feature set make it a strong contender in the budget microphone market.

Tank 3 - In-situ

I’d say, if you’re looking for a durable, versatile, and affordable microphone that delivers excellent sound quality for vocals and spoken word, the Fifine Tank 3 is definitely worth considering. I’ve made it my go-to for video content and streaming, and I’ve got some vocal tracks to put down with it, soon, too.
