We’re about to start the latest critical darling, Black Myth: Wukong here at ninjarefinery.com. Much like my Diablo knowledge, my Sun Wukong/Journey to the West knowledge is minimal.
So I’ve watched a few different video breakdowns of the Chinese epic. I’ve of course understood modern interpretations and nods to Wukong in Dragonball and countless Monkey King characters in games.
So, I thought it worth sharing some Sun Wukong knowledge here. It’s a hot topic right now, and not everyone has the time to really sink their teeth into a 16th Century Chinese novel, weirdly.
Sun Wukong and Journey to the West
Journey to the West, a classic Chinese novel, has captivated readers for centuries with its epic tale of adventure, spiritual growth, and the triumph of good over evil. Originating from a collection of oral tales and legends, the novel was first written down in the 16th century by Wu Cheng’en.
Considered one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, Journey to the West is incredibly significant.
The story
Journey to the West revolves around the journey of the monk Xuanzang. Tasked by the Buddha to retrieve sacred scriptures from the Western Paradise. Xuanzang is joined by a colourful cast of characters, assigned to protect him on his perilous quest. Each representing a different aspect of human nature.
The Monkey King, Sun Wukong, is the most iconic figure, a mischievous and powerful deity with a rebellious spirit. Pigsy, a gluttonous and lazy monk, and Sandy, a loyal and hardworking deity, round out the group.
The journey takes them across treacherous landscapes, battling demons, monsters, and other supernatural forces. Along the way, the characters face numerous challenges, both physical and spiritual.
Through their adventures, they learn valuable lessons about loyalty, friendship, perseverance, and the importance of overcoming temptation. The story culminates in the successful retrieval of the scriptures and the characters’ attainment of enlightenment.
