The Legend of Zelda – Breath of the Wild (Wii U)

I was fortunate enough to get a really good deal on a Wii U and the latest Zelda game (Breath of the Wild) last week, and man am I glad!

I’ll write up some thoughts soon, but I’m had a few hours in and it has really changed the way I look at a game world.  See something up a tree but haven’t got arrows to knock it down? No problem! Climb the tree!

See a mountain off in the distance? Ok, good, go to it, scale it and see what’s there.  Careful though, it’s cold up there and you’ll suffer for it without the right clothing.

The level of detail, and the freedom you have almost from the get-go……man, what have “open world” games been doing for so long? I feel genuinely free to do anything here.

It looks great on the TV and even just on the Wii U control pad.  It feels great, and it sounds excellent (so far, the sparse, desolate feeling soundtrack works a treat).

Shrines are excellent little flashbacks to the dungeon puzzles of older Zelda games, and I’m loving the ones I’ve done already(only about 12!).  It’s all there, but it feels fresh and new.

So far, this game is turning out to be truly wonderful.

Biggest bug-bear so far? Quickly damaging weapons.  It isn’t really an issue, just the only thing I can nit-pick at, at the moment.

A review and thoughts will follow.
