Here at ninjarefinery.com we’ve long stood up for coffee as the best way to caffeinate at the very least (all those chemicals in the energy drinks and powders put us on edge). But, beyond its ability to awaken the sleepiest among us, coffee offers a wealth of health benefits.
While some may caution against that second cup, research suggests that moderate consumption can actually contribute to a longer, healthier life.

A Daily Dose of Antioxidants
Coffee is one of the richest sources of antioxidants, such as chlorogenic acid. These compounds combat oxidative stress, an imbalance linked to cell damage, inflammation, and aging. Which must be why I look so young!
So ditch the expensive creams and grab a cup of mud instead!
Coffee on the Brain
Coffee does more than just wake you up. Studies suggest that it can really help in the brain department, too. By reduceing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases (Research indicates that regular consumption may lower the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease!)
Also, Austrian researchers found that one cup of coffee significantly improved short-term memory and reaction time. I’d suggest it makes us the best gamers if we have a cup o’ Joe at our side. Especially on those marathon sessions. Keep lively, keep sharp and stay on top.

Your Heart Likes Coffee Too
Contrary to past beliefs, moderate consumption (2-3 cups a day) is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. The antioxidants in coffee improve circulation and support healthy blood vessels. A large-scale study found lower rates of cardiovascular disease and death among coffee drinkers.
This doesn’t mean it’s impossible, but it does help manage risk, and lets be honest. Prevention is better than cure (although when I last checked, there’s no cure for death…..).
The Original Pre-Workout
Caffeine enhances physical performance by increasing adrenaline levels and mobilizing fatty acids. This translates to more energy for your workouts. Caffeine can also reduce perceived exertion, making exercise feel easier.
So long as your coffee isn’t laced with milk and sugars/syrups etc, it’s a real boon to helping keep fit. I’ve started to have a coffee an hour before a run, to just help with the energy levels and to keep me going.

Coffee Drinkers High
Coffee boosts dopamine levels, the “feel-good” chemical in your brain, leading to increased energy and positivity. However, this mechanism can also contribute to caffeine dependence. Something that should be taken more seriously than it currently is.
Offsetting the Effects of Alcohol
Dry January? Cutting out the booze? Coffee may offer protection against liver disease.
A study found that coffee drinkers had a reduced risk of chronic liver disease and related mortality. I’d be keen to see longer term studies to see how true this is, but lets run with it for now.

The Final Sip
Coffee offers numerous health benefits, from protecting your heart and brain to enhancing your workouts and potentially extending your lifespan.
Who can argue with that? Of course, your 3 pump latte with extra sugar etc, isn’t likely to be helping you. The little bean that’s been ground and expressed is doing wonders for us.
Try go with a black coffee, or at least remove the sugar/sweeteners and look at milks with healthy fats and added vitamins.
