COVID came and we were all indoors. Ring Fit Adventure had just been released, and we were all looking for ways to exercise when Gyms, Leisure Centres and other places were closed.
Ring Fit Adventure was sought after in a big way. Getting hold of it initially, was tough, but we got one! I played for a bit and honestly, just dropped off.
I’m not in the best shape of my life. In fact, I’ve seen my gym visits drop off and some days my step count is minimal. Being fortunate enough to work at home regularly means I could actually do more. But I’ve made my excuses and carried on.
Alas, no more! Several different factors have all come into my periphery at the same time and so, it’s somehow become inevitable that I’m giving Ring Fit Adventure another go.
Ring Fit Adventure
What is it? For those that don’t know, Ring Fit Adventure is Nintendo’s fitness game a la Wii Fit, but with more modern peripherals. Using the joycons, you strap one to your left leg and one to the flexible ring that gives resistance.
You’re then jogging on the spot on a single player story mode.
Travel and combat involve exercises and the joycons are detecting your movement all the while. Regularly using the infrared sensor to check my heart rate, too.
The plan
Now, here’s where I make some kind of statement and fail to live up to it (see many other posts about not buying games and other lofty goals….).
But….today we’re being more realistic. I’m going to check-in after a week. Playing Ring Fit Adventure every day, or at least exercising every day. Mixing it up with some cycling and ultimately getting back to running.
Consistency and creating a habit is what I need this week, or the next few weeks. So that’s my pledge. 7 days. As of now, I’ve already completed four of those since starting to write this (yes things take days!), so it’s a good start.
Ring Fit Adventure isn’t the cure to my weight and general fitness, but it’s the catalyst, and I want it to be the constant. 20 minutes every day is better than 0 minutes every day, right? After a week, we’ll see where it’s at and look at 2 week goal, and ultimately I’d like to see a month of daily, consistent activity.
Hard to have excuses when the Switch is so portable, and at a push I could just do some sit-ups etc in a pinch.
Considerations
I’m no stranger to cardio, and I’m well aware of the good things to do. I’m also incredibly good at justifying bad decisions/laziness to myself.
One of my biggest downfalls is a consistent diet. I’m a real sucker for fast food, refined sugare and all these other things. So I’m using my Ring Fit Adventure as a starting point to change habits, too.
It won’t be easy, but the whole exercise element is totally redundant if I’m eating garbage the whole time. It’s like the old adage “you can’t outrun a bad diet”. I used to run miles and miles week, and found I’d plateaued because I wasn’t taking nutrition seriously.
This isn’t me saying I’m going to start logging calories and managing macros. I’ve done all that before and it doesn’t work for me. I just need to moderate better and half the battle will be won.
Here we go
I’ll be back next week to report progress and start to review the game. It’s going to be more game focused than fitnessed focused. However, I’ll at least update my progress/consistency.
Sun is out tonight and I have an eBike to film with the drone. So it’s a bike ride evening.
As a tandem to this, friend of the site, Josh, at Fullsync.co.uk has started a fitness journey, dictated by AI. You should totally check that out, too!
Here’s to games, and to being more active!
